Public Statement from the Temuco Jail, Chile
From a Mapuche Political Prisoner
Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca
April 25, 2007
April 22, 2007 -

Mapuche political prisoner Héctor LLaitul Carrillanca made the following statement in response to Guarantee Judge of Nueva Imperial refusal to grant the prisoner’s transfer to Penitentiary Enforcement Center of Angol:

· With the Mapuche People’s Nation and general public opinion as my witnesses, I am in indefinite hunger strike from this day forward to denounce the following:

· That we are facing a new political and judicial farce on the part of the racist and fascist Chilean government, a farce that has not only deprived me of liberty but that also keeps me separated from my family and segregated from my other Mapuche political prisoner brothers.

· That I am deprived of liberty and accused of an arson attempt in the community of Chol-Chol, though the Prosecutor’s Office and plaintiffs of the Mininco Lumber Company have no evidence whatsoever, with the exception of an alleged statement from a Mapuche brother whom I do not know and have never met, and who according to what the press reports, might have been arrested in strange circumstances.

· That pursuant to information received, said declaration might have been drafted by police intelligence personnel, who forced Roberto Painemil to sign, under illegal duress, threats to his family and even torture, with the aim of involving known Mapuche leaders in the area, myself in particular. All of this was certified at the time by prosecutors in the case.

· That therefore this hunger strike is for the purpose of obtaining my immediate transfer to the Angol jail and the holding of a fair trial.

· Lastly, I restate my commitment to the process of territorial and political reconstruction of the Mapuche nation.
