It’s been a month. Here at UB, we’ve tried our best to come through with what we promised you.
We’ve demonstrated our investigative reporting skills though Luis Gomez’s five part series on racism and violence in Cochabamba.
We’ve shown we can report “from within,” by offering first-hand accounts and direct communication from one of the most impressive social movements of recent years, the APPO of Oaxaca.
We’ve proved we can reach far and wide—publishing original reports and analysis from or on issues in Guatemala, Venezuela, Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia.
We’ve offered our ongoing media watch-dog services by inaugurating Jean Friedman-Rudovsky’s column, Birds of La Paz.
We’ve demonstrated our capacity for irreverent journalism by not shying away from sensitive topics or analysis that butts heads with either the government the rightwing elite or the commercial media in Bolivia.
We, following in the footsteps of the great journalist John Reed, have been telling you what we see from where we see it, so that you can better construct your own truth about this part of the world.
All in all, we’ve been carrying out the promises put forward in our opening statement just over a month ago.
We haven’t always been as on time as we’d like. We haven’t made every Spanish text available in English. And we haven’t nearly reached the breath and depth that we intend UB to have in the future. And you have our word that we’ll improve.
But we have to the journalistic demand that our Bolivian compañeros will never let us forget: to inform well.
Until now, we have operated practically without financial assistance. But we now need your help.
Your UB staff and our contributors have been spending countless hours writing, translating, conducting interviews, thinking, exploring and building relationships—the benefits of which you reap through their insightful and engaging articles.
So please, donate today.
As you may have noticed, you have two options for contributing.
The first is accessible from the donate page or here. There you can make a general UB contribution that goes to the editors to sustain our writing and our work to keep the whole operation up and running smoothly.
The second option is to go to an article that caught your attention and at the bottom of the text you will find a link that enables you to donate directly to that author.
Both types of contributions are important. Please donate in the way you feel most comfortable; or better yet, do both!
In a time when Latin American people’s movements are carving out new forms of struggle and dealing with the challenges of moving from opposition protest to the formulation of real alternatives to a neo-liberal, Washington dictated economic and political model, media spaces such as UB that report—from below—the what’s and why’s and how’s are invaluable.
